Many crucify themselves between two thieves: Regrets from the past and fears of tomorrow.
I have been pretty good at quickly recognizing and interrupting my “fears of tomorrow”. Each time I begin constructing a story about some future event I remind myself of the quote by Mark Twain that says “The most horrific things in my life actually never happened”.
The challenge for me is allowing my regrets of the past to occupy rent-free space in my mind and linger. One of my coaches once told me that it’s ok the visit the past as long as you can capture a lesson that enables you to move forward with greater wisdom. If you are simply visiting the past to loathe in self-pity and beat the crap out of yourself then remember the phrase: “If it brings you down then give it up”

Several of my clients have young children and through my relationship with them plus my relationship with my grandchild, I have a chance for a Do-over. It’s a bit bittersweet for me when I support parents to have the kind of relationship with their children that I wish I could have had when my kids were that age.

You can’t have a better tomorrow if you are thinking about yesterday all the time.
Today I am thankful that I have been blessed with the opportunities to share what I have learned in my journey to others so that they may more fully enjoy theirs. I know I can’t go back and alter the way I used to be however I can practice being the fullest expression of my gift in the service of friends, family, and clients today.
